This coming Friday and Saturday nights, Shihad are doing two shows in Melbourne, with the set list for each of the nights being a complete track-by-track playthrough of their two most popular albums -- one on each night.

2010 has been such a drought for live music for me -- Taking Back Sunday and Placebo were both absolutely excellent at Soundwave, but that whole experience was tainted for me by My Chemical Romance's last-minute flounce off the lineup. And Lady Gaga was, no lie, one of the most life-changing live shows I've ever seen. Cobra Starship were fab but I was going through a seriously bad depressive episode when I saw them and could barely cope with being alive, much less enjoying music, and also I had major foot-in-mouth disease that's left me kind of cringing even now. [edit: I also saw the Used and forgot to include them, my bad!]

Um, when I put it like that it actually kind of looks like I've seen a solid amount of music this year! But it has not felt like that. I HAVE BEEN PINING IN A DROUGHT, OKAY. I feel like I haven't been to a live show in about a thousand years.

And Shihad are the best live band in the world. No, no, there are no exceptions here. Every single other band, no matter how much I adore them or how wonderful they are, cannot compare. They just make me happy.

I bought tickets to these two shows the moment they went on sale, and other things for the same evening keep coming up -- a friend's birthday party! Possible babysitting job! -- and no matter how awesome these evenings sound, I've declined all the invites.

Because lately, there's nothing in the world I've needed more than a barrier against my rib cage, and a crowd pressing in from all sides as it dances, and a song at the top of my lungs.
