The thing is that I think it's intentionally so. Like, I'm pretty sure the word 'fellowship' is actually used at a couple of points, and in On Writing King says that a huge number of the fantasy novels that exist, exist because their authors couldn't bear to not have any more Lord of the Rings to read.

I... do not know if this makes everything better or worse. But it makes me sure that Richie and Eddie's love was pure and true, as they are clearly the Merry and Pippin. (Also Bill = Aragorn and Ben = Sam and I have to stop doing this before I get even more irredeemable.)
